The Unobstructed Chair Frame Provides for Weaving Bliss

10 December 2021

I would like to share a bit about the flexibility that the unobstructed chair frame presents to both you and Caning Canada.

An unobstructed chair frame presents you with a blank pallet to showcase your personal preferences and accent your chosen decor. I won't judge your chooses because it's not in my nature. Let's embrace your creativity and if you would like our opinion we would be happy to share them with you as we come to a material and weaving style for your chair.

If the chair you would like to restore or modernize currently has a woven seat then it is likely unobstructed or any obstructions are minimal and weaving attachment can be adjusted to accommodate the interference.

Caning Canada offers Danish cord, Fibre rush, Seagrass, Binding cane or rattan, Shaker tape and flat reed as options to restore or modernize your chairs.

Once the old material has been removed you can see that these chairs present a clean pallet for your creative juices to flow. Sometimes the side rails of the chair sit higher than the front and back rails. That's okay however this is something we need to discuss when coming to a material and weaving style choice as both these choices impact how a material sits on the chair frame.

If you flip your upholstered chair upsidedown we can often determine what types of interference are present. Corner supports present challenges for a weaver however more often than not we can find a workaround.

If the corners of the chair frame sit underneath the cushion and aren't exposed understand that we as weavers can't change this. You would need to find a way to cover the corners or include them as part of your finished weaving design.

When there are slats in the backrest which interfere with weaving the seat then it's all about managing your expectations of the finished seat. Frame interferences need to be incorporated into the weave.

How does the colour of the chair frame, weaving material and style change the look of a woven chair?

Sometimes the transformations are beyond belief. How can you take a piece that looks like it's ready to be put to bed in a landfill and turn it into a masterpiece? With your imagination and a little love from a specialty weaver that's how.

As you can see below there is a material choice and weaving style to suit any decor.

The Canadian-made Paysanne chair is a traditional Quebec-style chair, also known as the “cloverleaf” chair. These chairs are extremely sturdy while being elegant making a statement at the table, screaming out for a kitchen party, or in our case a get-together around the firepit. Our Cloverleaf chairs have come out unblemished after the roll test at more than one campfire. Now that's Canadian-made sturdy.

Caning Canada usually sees these wonderful chairs when the rawhide becomes cracked and torn. Rawhide is very strong however is does present sharp edges once broken. To be clear Caning Canada does not do any leatherwork. We are seat weaving while RVing and space are a real thing for us.

Personal preference is just that it's personal. I would be more than happy to share my preferences with you understanding that they are mine and do not necessarily align with yours. You're safe with us to explore the materials and weaving styles offered by Caning Canada.

I personally love the look of the no-nail Danish cord weave on these chairs. What do you think?

Another beautiful option is fibre rush. Have you noticed how changing the weaving material totally changes the look and feel of the chair? So flexible. I love it.

Updating or refreshing the seat of your chairs is a wonderful way to modernize your decor while being environmentally responsible.

Whether your chair currently has a cushion on top of the chair frame or upholstery fastened directly to the frame of the chair we can work together to find a weaving solution.

Yes, even tables can be beautified when unobstructed with a freshly woven cane shelf.

Let Caning Canada be your muse.

Caning Canada is Heading for Saskatoon, Saskatchewan

27 June 2021

We have spent a wonderful three months in Cochrane, Alberta seat weaving while RVing and are very excited to be heading for Saskatoon, Saskatchewan for six weeks on July 14, 2021.

We originally planned on going to Saskatoon as there was a mid-century dealer who needed to have several Danish cord chair sets woven including a set of the simply beautiful Hans Wegner double rail CH23 dining chairs. A set of the Poul Cadovis Pia chairs, a set of the Model 316 chair by Peter Hvidt & Orla Mølgaard Nielsen for Søborg Møbelfabrik 1958 and a FD-147L Teak lounger by Peter Hvidt and Orla Molgaard Nielsen for France & Daverkosen which was designed in 1951. Unfortunately, we haven't been able to connect with them for their projects and hope everything is well with them during these trying times.

We have a few other projects booked which will block out about three weeks of the six weeks we plan to seat weave and explore the beautiful parks located in the North of Saskatchewan. If you are located in Saskatchewan and require seat weaving please send us a message with a photo of the front, back, and underside of the piece so we can provide you with an estimate and get you booked in while we are in the area. We will be leaving Saskatoon at the end of August 2021.

We currently have another set of the Peter Hvidt Model 316 chairs booked, a couple of Moller 401's which were designed in 1974 by Jorgen Henrik Moller, a handwoven cane project, a pre-woven cane dining set, and a set of fibre rush chairs being dropped by a couple moving from Ontario to Edmonton on their way by Saskatoon.

We are so very excited to have such a lovely variety of woven chairs to restore, to chat with some new folks and find out a bit about their stories, and last but not least, explore another beautiful part of our Country.
